Push, WhatsApp and Discord

Texts and email are all you really need. Push, WhatsApp and Discord are extras, for people who'd rather hear things another way.

You add each one yourself, from Add another on the How you're reached tab of Your settings. An organiser can't add them for you. Each gets its own card with the same two switches as everything else, Announcements and questions and Mentions. There's more on how those work in How you're reached.

Two rules cover all three:

Push, step by step

Push is a notification on your phone or computer instead of a text, and it doesn't cost anyone anything. If you'd like it:

  1. iPhone or iPad only: put Mooting on your home screen first. Apple only allows push from a home-screen app. Open your own link, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then open Mooting from the new icon. It'll open straight to your board. On Android or a computer, skip this; push works in the browser as it is.
  2. Open Your settings, stay on the How you're reached tab, choose Notifications on this device under Add another, and press Turn on push. Your device asks whether to allow notifications. Say yes.
  3. Tap the test notification when it arrives. That tap is the confirmation, and nothing else counts. The page then says Push is working on this device.

Until you tap it, the device's card says Needs confirming, and it isn't a way through yet. If it's stuck, press Send the test again on its card. Once it's confirmed, the card says Working. It's called This device on the device itself, and Another device everywhere else.

A working device gets a Send a test button instead, so you can check it still gets through. It sends the same test notification, once an hour at most. If nothing arrives, check notifications from Mooting are allowed in that browser, and in the phone or computer's own settings.

"Needs re-confirming" means the push service has told Mooting the subscription's gone. Maybe it's a new phone, a cleared browser, or the app was removed and put back. Nothing's sent there and nothing's retried, and your other ways of being reached carry on as normal. Press Send the test again on its card, or turn push on again on the device itself, and tap the test.

Once a browser has push turned on, Add another stops offering "Notifications on this device" there, because it's managed from its own card. A different phone or computer that hasn't turned push on yet still sees the option, so you can add more than one device.

WhatsApp

If WhatsApp's turned on for this Mooting, Add another has a WhatsApp row. (You can't add it from the shared link.)

  1. Choose WhatsApp, pick the number's country, and type the number the way you'd dial it there, same as for a text.
  2. Press Send my link on WhatsApp. Your link arrives as a WhatsApp message from Mooting's own number, with an Open Mooting button. The link's in the button.
  3. Wait a moment. Once WhatsApp tells Mooting the message has reached your phone, the card says Confirmed. It can take a few seconds.

Until then the card says Needs confirming, and the number isn't a way through yet. If nothing arrives, check the number and press Send again on its card.

A confirmed number gets a Send a test button. WhatsApp only lets a business start a conversation with a message WhatsApp has approved, so the test is your link again, in the same message with its Open Mooting button. Your link doesn't change. WhatsApp charges for every one, so it checks with you first, and each number can only be tested once a day. Texts and WhatsApp share a limit of two tests a day between them.

"Not getting through" means WhatsApp has told Mooting it can't deliver to that number. Usually the number isn't on WhatsApp, or your WhatsApp uses a different one. Nothing's sent there, and your other ways of being reached carry on. Press Send again once it's sorted.

Every other WhatsApp message from Mooting is short, with an Open the board button. The button carries your link, with a one-time pass on it. The same number can be both a text contact and a WhatsApp contact, each with its own card and switches.

To switch WhatsApp off, press Remove on its card, or just reply STOP to any Mooting message on WhatsApp. Either way, nothing more goes there. Adding the number again under Add another turns it back on. Replies to Mooting's number are only read for STOP. Nobody sees them, and they aren't kept.

Discord

If Discord's turned on for this Mooting, Add another has a Discord row with a Connect Discord button.

  1. Press Connect Discord. Discord asks you to sign in, and to let Mooting know who you are and add you to a server. Say yes.
  2. You're added to a quiet server. It's a Mooting server with no channels, there so the bot can message you. There's nothing to read or post there.
  3. The bot says hello. It sends you Discord is connected. Once that's arrived, you're confirmed, and the card says Confirmed.

Until that first message gets through, the card says Needs confirming, and it isn't a way through yet. If Discord says it can't message you, you'll be shown how to fix it: open Discord, find the Mooting server, open its Privacy Settings, turn on Direct Messages, then press Reconnect on the card.

"Needs reconnecting" means Discord has told Mooting it can't message you any more. You've probably turned off direct messages, or left the Mooting server. Nothing's sent there, and your other ways of being reached carry on. Press Reconnect on its card once it's sorted.

A confirmed account gets a Send a test button. The bot sends Mooting: this is a test, once an hour at most. If it doesn't arrive, check the Mooting server's Privacy Settings still allow Direct Messages, and that you're still in the server.

Once you're connected, Add another stops offering Discord. It's one account, managed from its own card. While it needs confirming or reconnecting, the card has a Reconnect button. Once it's working, there's a Change account button instead, in case you want Mooting to message a different Discord account.

No notification on your phone? If Discord's open on a computer, Discord shows new messages there and holds back your phone's notifications. Close it on the computer and your phone takes over, sometimes after a few minutes. Still nothing? Check the Mooting bot's conversation isn't muted, and that Discord's allowed to send notifications in your phone's settings.

Remove on its card stops it.
