How you're reached
All of this is in Your settings, and it covers every event you're on. Tap your figure and name at the top right of any of your pages, then Your settings.
Every email has a link straight to it. Texts don't, because Mooting never puts a link in a text: open Mooting and tap your figure instead.
Mooting only gets in touch about things a friend has decided matter. Your settings is where you say how, and where you make it stop. There are five tabs:
- How you're reached: your numbers, addresses, devices, WhatsApp and Discord, and what each one gets.
- Notifications: mention pings and the daily digest.
- Your figure: the little figure that's you on the road and beside your name. You're given one to start with, and asked about it on your first board.
- Pause or leave: switching off everything from one event (and back on), or leaving it.
- Privacy: your link, forgetting this device, and Delete me.
The three main ways
- Text message. To a number. The one thing nearly everybody actually sees.
- Email. To an address.
- Push. A notification on one phone or laptop. Free and instant, but the least reliable of the three, so it has a few rules of its own (see below).
If they're turned on for this Mooting, there are two more extras like push: WhatsApp, from Mooting's own WhatsApp number, and Discord, a direct message from the Mooting bot.
Numbers have to be mobiles, and some Mootings only text certain countries. If yours isn't one of them, the page says so.
You can have as many of each as you like. Each one gets its own card with its own switches, so you can say text me for announcements, email me for mentions.
What the switches do
- Announcements and questions. The things that matter, plus the reminders that chase a question towards its deadline. Actions come under this one too.
- Mentions. Someone saying your name in the chat.
Your link ignores the switches. It's only ever sent to a contact you've confirmed, by text, email, WhatsApp or Discord, never as a push notification. A link is the thing you can lose, and a notification isn't somewhere you can go back and find it.
The daily digest is email only.
The cards
Each card says what it is and, next to that, Confirmed or Not confirmed yet.
- A number or address is confirmed as soon as a link Mooting sent to it gets through. There's no code to type. For an email, that's when it's sent. For a text, it's when the network says it arrived: a text that's sent and then turned away doesn't count.
- A device counts once you've tapped its test notification.
- A WhatsApp number counts once WhatsApp says the first message has arrived.
After changing a switch, press Save under the cards. There's one rule, and the page tells you it: announcements and questions need at least one way to reach you. Mentions don't. Off is a perfectly good answer for those. If it's off, mentions just wait for you in the chat.
Send a test
Confirmed cards have a Send a test button, so you can check for yourself it still gets through. (A card that still needs confirming has its own way of doing that, and one that's stopped working doesn't get the button.) Each kind sends its own short test:
- Text message: Mooting: this is a test. Texts from Mooting reach you here. It checks with you first, showing the number partly hidden and the price: Send a test text to +44 7400 β’β’β’β’ 89? About 5p.
- Email: an email called Mooting: a test, saying where it came from and how to change your settings.
- Push: the usual test notification.
- Discord: a message from the Mooting bot saying it's a test.
- WhatsApp: your link, in the same message you get when you add the number, with its Open Mooting button. It checks with you first too. Your link doesn't change.
Once it's sent, the card says so, and what to check if it doesn't turn up: the number and its country for a text, your spam folder for email, that notifications are allowed for push, that the Mooting server lets members message you for Discord, and that the number's on WhatsApp.
There are limits, because some of these cost money:
- Email, push and Discord are free, so you can test each one once an hour.
- Texts and WhatsApp cost whoever runs this Mooting a few pence a message, so each number can be tested once a day.
- Two paid tests a day in total, texts and WhatsApp together, however many numbers you've got.
- The daily text cap. If Mooting's already sent as many texts as it's allowed today, a test text isn't sent, and you're told so. It won't turn up tomorrow instead.
If you've used up a test, the card tells you when you can send another: in 40 minutes, or tomorrow.
Adding and removing
Under the cards, Add another has a row for each way: Text message, Email, Notifications on this device, and WhatsApp and Discord if they're turned on. Tap one and it opens.
For a number, pick the country first. The picker shows a flag and the dialling code, like πΈπͺ +46, and only lists countries Mooting can text. Then type the number the way you'd dial it there. A number written in full, with a + and the country code, is taken as it is.
Press Send my link there. Your link goes straight away, and the first message is how it gets confirmed. If it can't be sent, you're told there and then, so a typo gets caught while you're still on the page.
Phone networks often block texts with links in them, so a number gets a 6-digit code instead of a link. Type it into the box on that number's card and press Confirm. It's confirmed once the code's typed in, or once the network says the text arrived, whichever comes first.
Remove (the bin on each card) stops a contact. Nothing more goes to it, and the page says so. It's kept rather than deleted, so a typo later on can't hand that number to someone else. Adding it again starts it back up.
Push, WhatsApp and Discord
Only you can add these, from Add another. One that isn't confirmed yet, or has stopped working, doesn't count towards "at least one way to reach you". The final reminder before a deadline never uses them.
On iPhone or iPad, push needs Mooting on your home screen first. How to set each one up, and what their cards mean, is in Push, WhatsApp and Discord.
Reminders before a deadline
A question with a closing time comes with a little ladder of reminders. You only get the ones you haven't already answered:
- The question itself, on the ways you've switched on for it.
- Last call, two days before it closes, the same ways. The text says reminder.
- Final call, a day before, and louder (the text says last reminder): a text, if Mooting has any working number for you, whether or not it's switched on for announcements, because texts are what people actually see. No number? Your email again, rather than nothing. Never push, WhatsApp or Discord.
The question itself counts as the first rung. So a question asked less than two days before it closes reaches you once, not again a minute later with "you haven't answered".
A reminder that should have gone more than twelve hours ago is skipped. So if the server's been off overnight, it comes back and only says what's still true.
Answering stops all of it. So does the question closing. And if you've stopped everything from the event, you get none of it.
An action with a Do by date gets the same ladder until you tick Done: Fauxmas reminder: 'Pay the deposit' is due Sun 18 Oct, 18:00. Done it? Tick it on the board: and your link, then the final call a day before. Tapping Got it doesn't stop them, because you still haven't done it. The date passing doesn't close anything, so once it's gone the reminders just stop. On WhatsApp they come as an event update naming the action. An action without a date never chases you by itself.
Stopping one event
The Pause or leave tab lists every event you're on, each with a Notifications switch. Switch one off and that event sends you no announcements, reminders, mentions or digest. It shows Stopped.
The board's still there whenever you want it, with a line at the top and a Resume button.
Organisers see stopped next to your name on their People page, so nobody spends a week wondering why you never answer.
Leaving an event
Under each event on the same tab there's Leave this event. It asks you once: You'll stop hearing about Fauxmas 2026. Your answers and messages stay. An organiser can add you back.
Then you're off its People page and its road, and nothing more comes from it, not even the digest. You land on your events page, or the front page if that was your only one. Your organisers aren't sent anything; their People page just quietly says you left.
Changed your mind? Open the event's link again and it'll offer Ask to join again. If the event makes newcomers wait for an organiser, you'll wait too. If it lets them straight in, you're straight back.
If you're the only organiser, you can't leave. Make someone else an organiser on the People page first, or delete the event from Event settings.
The daily digest
One email a day covering all your events, grouped by event, and only if there was any chat. Switch it on under Daily digest on the Notifications tab. You'll need an email address.
Ping me when someone mentions me is on the same tab. If it's off, mentions just wait in the chat. If every one of your contacts has Mentions switched off, the tab tells you, because a ping would have nowhere to go.
Each event's organisers choose what time it goes out, in that event's timezone, and the page tells you: Goes out at 6pm UK time. It's an evening hour, so there's still time to do something about what you read. If you're on two events with different times, the earlier one wins, and you get one email covering both.
The digest starts from when you switch it on. Your first one covers what was said after that, not the day before.
Delete me
Delete me is on the Privacy tab. It wipes your contacts, stops your link working, and turns your name into someone. What it keeps, and why, is under Stopping, and leaving.
