Event settings
Event settings, in the bar at the top of the board, is for organisers, and only affects this event. Your own settings, the ones that follow you to every event, are under your figure and name at the top right; see How you're reached.
Starting an event
On the front page, under Got a link from a friend? Get it again (that one's for getting back into an event you're already on), there's Start an event.
Some Mootings ask for an invite code first. Starting events there is invite-only, so ask Ian for the code. You never need one to join an event.
Then give your name, what the event's called, a number or email, and the timezone its dates and deadlines should be in. For a number, pick the country first, then type it the way you'd dial it there.
Press Start the event. Your link goes to that number or address (which is also how it's checked), and the event's created with you as its organiser. If something's not right, the form comes back with what you typed still in it, and tells you what to fix under the box it's about.
The browser you started it in is trusted for organiser pages straight away. So is a browser you open a link from one of Mooting's messages in, and the first browser that opens your link in the next hour. Anywhere else, organiser pages ask for a 6-digit code once. See Your link.
Then add people from the People page, or pass the shared link round.
The five sections
Event settings has five sections. On a phone, Save stays stuck to the bottom of the screen so it's always in reach.
- Details: name, dates, venue, about this event, timezone, and which country phone numbers start on. The timezone list starts with this event's own zone and a few common ones, then every zone there is.
- Who can do what: the two permissions.
- Sending: the text cap, and dry run.
- Front door: whether newcomers on the shared link wait to be let in.
- Digest: Daily digest goes out at, the hour this event's chat digest goes, in the event's own timezone. It's evening to start with, so there's still time to do something about what people read.
Dates. Set the start date and an empty end date fills in as the same day, because most events are one day long. The end can't be before the start. A date you typed yourself is never changed.
About this event is a line or two about it, up to 300 characters. It goes in the email people get when you add them or let them in, and at the top of the board under the name and dates. Only people on the event see it: it's not on the shared link. When you start a new event from this one, it comes across too, and you can change it there.
Phone numbers default to is the country every number on this event is read as: Add someone, a person's contacts, and the sign-up on the shared link all start there. Leave it on Use the server default unless most of the event's people are from one place. It's for something like a Swedish trip organised from Britain, where otherwise every number would need Sweden picking by hand.
Whoever's typing can still pick a different country, and a number written in full with a + carries its own. The front page and How you're reached aren't part of any event, so they stick with the server's default.
Permissions
There are two, and each one's set to Everyone, Organisers only, or Chosen people (tick them in People):
- Can pin to the board. Quiet. Nobody's told. Cheap.
- Can notify everyone. Sends a notice to every member, their own way, and tracks who's seen it. Uses up everyone's attention.
Picking "Chosen people" adds a column of ticks to the People page on a bigger screen, and a switch for each person in their row under By person on a phone. Organisers can always do both. Anyone can mention people in the chat; that isn't a setting.
The text cap
This is under Sending. How it works, and what happens once you're past it, is in Posting notices.
Dry run
A switch under Sending: Only send things to organisers, for testing. Announcements, questions, reminders and mentions go to organisers and nobody else, so you can try a real notice out on a real event.
It doesn't affect sending someone their link, or the daily digest. Organisers see a line on the board while it's on, so you can't switch it on and forget about it.
The front door
This decides whether newcomers on the shared link wait for an organiser to let them in, or walk straight in. The Shared link card on the People page says which, and anyone waiting is at the top of that page; see Letting people in. What someone with the shared link sees is in Joining an event.
New event from this one
This is in the ⋯ menu at the top of the People page, and at the bottom of Event settings. It makes a new event with this one's people, roles, permission ticks and settings, and asks you for a name, dates, a venue and a timezone. Who comes along lists everyone, each with a tick box, and Tick all and Tick none above them.
- Everyone starts off ticked, except anyone who'd stopped everything from this event. They start unticked, with a note next to their name, so it's your call and you know what you're deciding.
- Nobody's sent anything. They're the same people with the same links and contacts. The first thing they'll hear is the first notice you post.
- Drafts, if you want them. This event's announcements, questions and actions can come across as drafts; see Drafts.
- What carries over. Dry run doesn't. The text cap does, because it's a decision about money. So does the country phone numbers start on, because that's about the people.
- Dates. Same as Event settings: set the start date, and an empty end date fills in as the same day.
Delete this event
This is at the very bottom of Event settings, for organisers. It deletes the event completely: its notices and every answer, its chat, its list of people, and anything still waiting to be sent. Nobody's sent anything.
To make sure you mean it, you type the event's name (capitals and spaces at either end don't matter), then confirm once more. It can't be undone.
People stay. Everyone keeps their link, and it still opens their other events. If this was someone's only event, they just don't have any now. Afterwards you land on your events page with Fauxmas 2026 has been deleted., and anyone who opens an old link to it (their own, or the shared link) is told This event has been deleted by its organiser.
It's also the way out if you're the only organiser and want to leave. Either make someone else an organiser first, or delete the event.
